Weekend Update

I really haven't posted since February?  Really?  Dang.  This is going to be newsy, so sit tight.

-----------------------

Spring has been good to me.  I have seen a lot of friends, some good music, World Cup cricket, and discovered that Rooibos tea has made it to my local grocery store.  You should drink Rooibos (sometimes incorrectly referred to as African red bush tea) - you will live a longer and more contented life.

Friends I have seen recently:  Luke came to town with Ryan Burwell.  We met up with Darren Rayl and Chris Boyle and hit up some karaoke.  One of my best friends from high school and his wife came out from South Africa and stayed with us for a few days.  Great times.  We ate good food, went line dancing, saw a Leigh Nash/Tyrone Wells concert and did a lot of catching up.  We got to have dinner with Maryann, who was in town for the Nashville Film Festival.  Jon and his entourage rolled into town last week.  It was a fantastic reunion, complete with Dylan, Luke, Amy, Bob, Chad and Ashley.  My friends are the best.  I'm glad you all came to visit me.

Musical highlight of the last few months: Pete Yorn concert at City Hall.  He knows how to sing and style his hair nice.

Disappointment of the month:  South Africa was defeated in the Cricket World Cup semi-final.  Fortunately, this time we were beaten fair and square with no rain interruptions and no ties.  It was much easier to stomach than the last two times and I didn't even cry or sing the national anthem.

Major milestone achieved:  Yesterday Heidi and I ran the Country Music Half Marathon.  It was one of the funnest and most totally awesomest experiences of my life!  It was our first half marathon and it will not be our last.  There were 30,000 people running round about Nashville with bands at every mile.  And now I have a medal.  Sa-weeeeet!

-------------------------------

Law school classes are now a thing of the past!  I have a couple papers to turn in and one more final on Friday and then I will officially be done with school forever!  I started school when I was 5 years old and haven't stopped since.  Reagan was president the last time I wasn't a student.  It feels good to be moving on with my life, although I'm a nerd and will probably miss school.  Hopefully getting paid will ease my pain.

In celebration of adding the initials J.D. to my name (which, incidentally already contains the initials J.D.) Heidi and I and some friends will be heading down to the Big Easy on Friday to revel in the festivities of the New Orleans Jazz Fest.  I am looking forward to a grand ole time.  Unfortunately, my exam schedule means that I will be missing my all-time favorites, the Counting Crows (Heidi will be there in my stead), though I will at least have the distinct pleasure of seeing John Legend tickle the ivories.

My dad is flying out for my graduation the following weekend, which is going to be awesome.  Then it's all about preparing for the bar exam in July.  I'd rather not talk about that.

-----------------------------

Thanks for hanging with me xanga readers.  Let's do this again sometime.

Sighting

I just saw Jack White (White Stripes, Raconteurs) at Jackson's tonight, just having a beer with his buddies like us regular folk.  Notice my last "currently listening" selection.  Needless to say, I was starstruck.

Cowboy and Indian(a Pacers)

Where to start.....??

I got cowboy boots.  They're real because I got them in Nashville.  Real cowboys wear real cowboy boots.  Hell yeah.

I also went line dancing and it was fantastic.  Everyone who visits me gets to come to Silverado's - a little slice of heaven on earth.  Where else can you line dance for a while, then booty shake to the likes of Nelly and Jay-Z for a while, all while drinking free beer and people-watching?  I'll tell you where else: nowhere.  No.  Where.

-----------------------------------

My brother got engaged!  I'm very excited.  He found himself a classy broad who will carry the Collins name well.  They're getting married in Houston, so my new boots will probably come in handy.  This also means that I'll get to see my parents and wee brother this year, which is always a bonus.  Miah and I try to do at least one noteworthy thing per year to make them fly back.  That way we don't forget what they look like.  Since we're running out of weddings and graduations, we're going to have to get creative.  How long until I turn 40?

----------------------------------

Other highlights since last we spoke:
-Had dinner with Jon.  We looked like the ambiguously gay duo sharing a booth in a dimly lit PF Changs, but it was ok because we're both married.  To girls.  And it's not half as weird as sharing a bedroom by choice.

-Went to Left Can Dance, Nashville's version of DPR, which I always enjoyed at AU.  I dusted off some of my best moves and even unveiled some new ones.  Heidi and I do an impressive "99 Luftballoons" dance.  We've got a little German in us.  (As in, I have a German heritage and Heidi's name is...well, Heidi.  We do not have a diminutive leiderhosen-wearing, schnitzel-eating person in us.  At least I don't think we do.)

-Watched a cricket match on DVD, a Christmas present from my parents.  It was so long, it was spread across 3 discs.  It was also the best cricket match ever played.

-Got to spend an evening with James and Chandni.  It started with sake-bombing, progressed to wine-tasting, and ended by watching and singing through Rent and Westside Story.  Yes, please.

-Twice hung out with Ben Follas, who has recently moved to Nashville to open up his own chiropractic practice.  Once was at Silverado's, so I do in fact have witnesses to its greatness.

    -Started my last semester ever.

------------------------------------

Any Pacers fans out there?  I know this is football week, but this trade has got my mind turning.  Who out there thinks that it was a really bad idea to trade 3 of our 6 best scorers (Harrington, Jackson, Jasekevicius) for a bunch of players who come off the bench on a team that's below .500?  Conversely, who thinks that getting rid of Jackson was worth any price?  And finally, who thinks that picking up two more skinny white boys is just what Indiana needed to fulfill its tradition of having a bunch of skinny white boys?  I think all these things.  Is anybody with me?

------------------------------------

It doesn't matter.  I'm a cowboy.  I'm a loner.

Have you ever thought about what you would be if you weren't doing what you were doing?  I think I would be a commercial airline pilot.

--------------------

Today is my last day of my last fall semester ever.  I like fall semesters.  They start when it's warm and end with Christmas - not  bad deal.  Just a couple weeks worth of finals and I will be 11 credit hours away from being a professional.  I'll sue your ass.  Actually I am already a professional at some other things, but they don't pay.  Examples are: making tea, making sandwiches and snood.

-------------------

Cable is no longer necessary.  All TV shows are online for free.  There are few things in life I love more than the Real World.  The Denver kids are some of my best friends.  When they meet me they will realize that I was with them all along.  It was me.  I turned off the oven so the pizza didn't burn.

One thing I love more than the Real World is the O.C.  I am an unabashed fan.  Anyone who thought the show would never be the same without Marissa was so, so wrong.  Kaitlyn is the new Marissa, Taylor is the new Summer and Summer is (thankfully) the same fabulous Summer.  Oh, it's on my friends.  It is on in the sweet, sweet California sunshine.

I miss California....

If anyone was wondering, Leonardo DiCaprio's South African accent is awful.
